Fritz Wolf

Hotshot of the Month

Originally from Shawano, Wolf resigned his Navy commission in 1941 to join the AVG Flying Tigers. He shot down two Mitsubishi bombers and two fighters. Back in the Navy, Wolf officially shot down his fifth enemy aircraft and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Later, Wolf became the first employee of the new Wisconsin State Aeronautics Commission.

Local recruitment during a time of war is not a new idea. The Junior Chamber of Commerce organizations of nine cities in northeast Wisconsin collaborated on a Naval pilot recruitment contest. According to Navy officials it was one of the most successful in the region.
